In Indian Railways, when you book a ticket, you may encounter different types of waiting list statuses. Here’s what each of them means

What is PQWL?

  1. A Pooled Quota Waiting List (PQWL) is shared by several small stations.
  2. Pooled Quotas normally operate only from the originating station of a route, and there is only one Pooled Quota for the entire run.
  3. The Pooled Quota is generally allotted for passengers travelling from the originating station to a station short of the terminating station, or from an intermediate station to the terminating station, or between two intermediate stations.
  4.  ( Cannot travel if booked online ). Waiting List
  5. It gets automatically cancelled on chart preparation & Refund will be automatically credited in Bank Account in 3 to 7 days.

What is Confirm PNR?

Passenger Name Record – PNR is a record in the database of a computer reservation system (CRS) that consists of the personal information for a passenger and also contains the itinerary for the passenger.

    1. Confirm PNR Status is assigned when the ticket was in RAC and has been moved to confirmed status but the seat number has not been given. The seat number will be allocated after charting. Charting is usually done 4 hours before departure of train.
    2. If ticket is cancelled, the general cancellation refund rules will apply.

What is Confirm+RAC PNR?

  1. Some passengers are in Confirmed (CNF) and some passengers are in RAC status in the same ticket.
  2. If charting has not been done yet, the RAC passenger may get confirmed seat after charting.
  3. All passengers can travel and their names will be displayed in the chart
  4. Ticket can be cancelled 30 minutes before departure of train.
  5. If any of the passenger is in RAC status, RAC Cancellation Rules will apply to all the passengers

What is RAC - Reservation Against Cancellation?

  1. Yes, RAC passengers Can Travel in the train.
  2. Once the general quota seats are filled, passengers are placed in RAC queue.
  3. 2 passengers are assigned the same side lower berth seat.
  4. If any cancellation is done in the general quota seats, the person in the RAC queue is assigned a CNF (Confirmed) status
  5. CNF status passengers are assigned seat number after charting is done.
  6. RAC PNR status passengers can cancel the ticket 30 minutes before departure of train.
  7. After charting if the status remains in RAC, full berth will be allotted from the confirmed passengers who have not boarded the train.
  8. While in train TTE checks passengers, who have not come. Vacant seats are assigned to RAC passengers.
  9. TTE is obligated to allot vacant berths to RAC passengers in priority according to RAC passengers given in the chart.

What is RAC + Waiting List?

  1. Some passengers are in RAC status and some passengers are in waiting list status.
  2. All passengers can travel.
  3. Can cancel up to 30 minutes before departure of train. RAC Cancellation Rules.
  4. If waiting list ticket passengers do not travel. TDR can be filed online.

What is General Waiting List (GNWL)?

  1. General Waiting List (GNWL) waitlisted tickets are issued when the passenger begins his/her journey at the originating station of a route or stations close to the originating station.
  2. This is most common type of waiting list and has got the highest chances of confirmation.
  3. Waiting List (Cannot travel if booked online).
  4. It gets automatically cancelled on chart preparation & Refund will be automatically credited in Bank Account in 3 to 7 days.

What is Remote Location Waiting List (RLWL)?

  1. Remote Location Waiting List (RLWL) means ticket is issued for intermediate stations (between the originating and terminating stations) because usually these are the most important towns or cities on that particular route.
  2. This type of tickets will be given a separate priority and confirmations will depend on the cancellations of a destination confirmed ticket. Remote location stations prepare their own chart 2-3 hours before the actual departure of train.
  3. For this type of ticket there are less chances of confirmation.
  4. Waiting List (Cannot travel if booked online).
  5. It gets automatically cancelled on chart preparation & Refund will be automatically credited in Bank Account in 3 to 7 days.

What is TQWL Tatkal Waiting List?

  1. For Tatkal Tickets, the waiting list issued used to be CKWL which has been changed to TQWL by the Indian Railways since December 2016.
  2. If tatkal ticket goes up, it directly gets confirmed and doesn’t go through RAC status unlike GNWL.
  3. During chart preparation, general waiting list (GNWL) is preferred over tatkal waiting list (TQWL) therefore tatkal waitlisted tickets are less likely to get confirmed.
  4. Tatkal ticket waitlist, refund of fare shall be granted in accordance with rule less clerk age

What is Charting in Railway?

  1. Charting – is the process of allocating the vacant seats of another quota to general/tatkal quota.
  2. There are many quotas under which the seats are assigned in Indian Railways.
  3. The first chart is usually prepared 4 hours before departure of train from originating station or remote location station.
  4. For early morning trains chart is prepared the night before.
  5. If the seats remain vacant in first chart, the remaining seats are made available for booking.
  6. The final chart is made 30min before departure of train.
  7. Some waiting list tickets are confirmed.
  8. Berth and coach number is assigned to all passengers having final status as confirmed or RAC.
  9. Fully waiting list e-tickets are automatically cancelled.
  10. Some passengers also get upgraded which means they get accommodation in higher class without paying any extra charge.
  11. Fully confirmed tickets cannot be cancelled after chart preparation.

Ticket Cancellation / Refund Rules?

  1. Waitlisted e-Ticket(GNWL, PQWL, RLWL) on which status of all the passengers is on waiting list even after preparation of reservation charts, names of all such passengers booked on that Passenger Name Record (PNR) shall be dropped from the reservation chart and Refund of fare will be automatically credited in Bank Account in 3 to 7 working days after deducting the clerk age.
  2. In case of fully waitlisted e-Ticket, refund after deducting clerk age will be processed automatically in the same account through which the payment was made at the time of booking.

If you have Waitlisted Counter Ticket & Ticket has not confirmed, the passenger should travel only in unreserved coach or he has to cancel the ticket.

General Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules

The amount deducted is based on the time of cancellation and the status of your ticket. Detailed are given below:

For cancellation of confirmed tickets more than 48 hours advance of the scheduled departure of the train.

Flat cancellation charges per passenger: –

  • AC first/Executive class – Rs.240/-
  • AC-2tier/1st class – Rs.200/-
  • AC-3tier/AC chair car, AC-3Economy – Rs.180/-
  • Sleeper – Rs.120/-
  • Second class – Rs.120/-

For cancellation of confirmed tickets less than 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 25% of the total fare paid by you subject of minimum flat cancellation charge.

For cancellation of confirmed tickets less than 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train and up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 50% of the fare paid by you, subject to minimum flat cancellation charges for each class.

For cancellation of RAC/Waitlisted tickets if ticket is presented for cancellation up to 30 min before the scheduled departure of the train irrespective of distance, Full refund of fare will be given, after deducting the clerk age charge per passenger

If you are having a ticket with several legs of journey:

  • If the first leg of the journey is confirmed the whole ticket will be treated as a confirmed ticket for purpose of applying cancellation/refund rules.
  • On the other hand, if the first leg of the journey is in the waiting list, even if the all the other legs of onward journey are confirmed, the whole ticket will still be treated only as waitlisted ticket for purpose of granting refund.
